We are seeking a motivated and organized Laboratory Technician to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of a dynamic molecular and cellular biology research laboratory at the University Zürich and ETH Zürich. The successful candidate will maintain laboratory infrastructure, equipment, consumables and documentation, prepare common reagents, support laboratory safety and logistics, and contribute to administrative organization and onboarding of new lab members. Applicants should have practical laboratory experience, strong organizational and communication skills, excellent computer literacy, and a proactive, service-oriented mindset. Experience in an academic environment is required. Fluency in German and English.
Tasks and duties
- General maintenance of laboratory rooms, amenities and equipment
- Management and control of stocks of consumables and plasticwares incl. purchasing, stocking, monitoring.
- Maintenance of lab infrastructure, including checking and servicing of lab equipment and machines, planning of purchase and replacement of equipment , contact with relevant internal offices, services and company suppliers
- Maintenance of reagents lists such as antibodies, enzymes and chemicals
- Organization and maintenance of fridges, freezers, liquid nitrogen tanks
- Cleaning, autoclaving and maintenance of glasswares
- Ensuring operational hygiene of lab spaces including disposal logistics, biohazards)
- Preparation of common buffers and solutions
- First responder to emergency notification for lab freezers, first aid, fire emergencies
- Collection and maintenance of lab documentation including progress reports, journal club, lab books, protocols and research documents
- Onboarding support of new lab members including organization of bench and desk, basic equipment, security and biosafety instructions, lab tour
- Organization of internal lab meetings and visits by external guests
- Suppport with administrative tasks, management and processing of bills
Profile, expected skills and qualities
- Have solid training in basic laboratories methods and experience in an academic environment (university research lab)
- Have good understanding of cell and molecular biology techniques and minimum technical experience
- Be trained to work with electronic devices and machines
